New Year’s resolutions

My New Year’s resolutions for 2010 were:

1. Be more social, both in real life, and through blogs. Check! I have made so many amazing friends this year through the blog and through school.  It’s wonderful to know so many amazing people!!

2. Run 2 half-marathons in 2010 Partial Fail. I ran 2 races last year, but due to mysterious ankle pain I wasn’t able to get to half-marathon distance.  I am incredibly proud of myself for finishing 2 5k races, and I really feel like I’ve caught the racing bug!

3.  Eat better. Check! I can confidently say that I have eaten the best this year than ever before.  I’ve cooked a lot more from scratch, and found some incredible recipes to try.

4. Travel. Check! Adam and I went to the Dominican Republic in March, and hit up Chicago for the Healthy Living Summit in August.

I feel pretty great about my goals for 2010, and I’m even more excited for 2011!  My resolutions are more like a ‘to-do’ list, but I think I can get them all done:

  1. Engage with people more.  Piggy-backing on 2010’s goal of be more social, I want to further cement the relationships I formed or rekindled by commenting, tweeting, emailing and meeting face-to-face more often.
  2. Make it a habit to wash my face.  This one seems simple, but I am not very good at doing it.  My skin is pretty temperamental, and I touch my face a lot.  I think that making it a habit to wash my face every night will help keep my skin clear and soft.
  3. Take more pictures.  I want to learn more about our DSLR and how to get the best shots, so that I can capture our lives better.  I want to be able to look back in 50 years and not be sad because all of my pictures are blurry and mediocre
  4. Run at least 2 races.  Maybe one 10k.
  5. Travel.  We already have plans with family to travel at Christmas, and depending on the location of this year’s Healthy Living Summit, go there, or do a trip to somewhere fun for a graduation/anniversary/Adam’s birthday trip.
  6. Cook more meals from scratch.  I have a bookcase full of cookbooks, so I’m thinking about doing a cookbook challenge like Tina did/is doing.
  7. Do more diy/sewing projects.  We just bought a new console for our tv, and it may need refinishing.  I would also like to make curtains for my office, and a new duvet cover for our bed.

Certainly more goals/resolutions than last year, but I think they’re achievable and maintainable.

I’d love to hear about your goals for 2011.  Taking on a home improvement project? tackling a long-distance race? losing weight or getting into shape? Tell me all about it!

2010 Resolution Update

Since the first quarter of 2010 is over, I thought an update on my New Years Resolutions would be appropriate.

My goals were:

1. Be more social in real life and online:  Check! I have spent a lot more time with my friends this year than I got to last year, and it feels so good!  Online, I am slowly building my name and it’s going pretty well.  I found out that some of the “Blog all-stars” (blog-stars?) that I follow all the time are actually reading my blog, so I must be doing something right!  I hope to extend my network over the summer by attending a few conferences (Healthy Living Summit maybe??) so resolution #1 is a big check for me!

2. Run 2 half-marathons in 2010: check-in-progress! I am training for a race in May, and I am hoping against hope that I will be ready for it!  I’m starting to feel more confident about my running skills, and I’m adding distance very easily, so things are looking good!!

3.  Eat better: Half-check? I have been trying to eat better, but I always slide back to the fast-food standbys.  Not driving my car to work is helping, and I think I am going to make a weekly commitment to not buy my lunch from Wendy’s!  That is my weakness, and I WILL avoid it.  There are many many other lunch options that are more healthy, more satisfying, and cheaper. What is your go-to lunch when you’re on the go/at work? I need ideas!!

4.  Travel: Check!  Hubby and I went to the Dominican Republic in March, and it was wonderful from beginning to end!  Like I said in #1 above, I would like to travel to maybe 1 or 2 conferences in the summer/fall, and maybe a weekend to NYC in there somewhere?  We will have to see where life takes us!!

So those were the resolutions I made in January, and I think I’m doing ok so far, except for the eating.  I know that making my goals SMART is the best way to achieve them, so for resolution #3 here is the new revised goal:

  • I will get at least 6 servings of fruit/veggies each day for the month of April
  • I will not buy Wendy’s for lunch or dinner any day in April
  • I will eat out at MAX 2 times per week, depending on current social plans (rehearsal brunch and wedding coming up in the next 2 weeks!)
  • I will eat intuitively for fuel and sustenance, and not because of boredom and mindlessness.

So there you have the 1/4 year update for 2010. Did you make resolutions this year?  How are they going?
