New Year’s resolutions

My New Year’s resolutions for 2010 were:

1. Be more social, both in real life, and through blogs. Check! I have made so many amazing friends this year through the blog and through school.  It’s wonderful to know so many amazing people!!

2. Run 2 half-marathons in 2010 Partial Fail. I ran 2 races last year, but due to mysterious ankle pain I wasn’t able to get to half-marathon distance.  I am incredibly proud of myself for finishing 2 5k races, and I really feel like I’ve caught the racing bug!

3.  Eat better. Check! I can confidently say that I have eaten the best this year than ever before.  I’ve cooked a lot more from scratch, and found some incredible recipes to try.

4. Travel. Check! Adam and I went to the Dominican Republic in March, and hit up Chicago for the Healthy Living Summit in August.

I feel pretty great about my goals for 2010, and I’m even more excited for 2011!  My resolutions are more like a ‘to-do’ list, but I think I can get them all done:

  1. Engage with people more.  Piggy-backing on 2010’s goal of be more social, I want to further cement the relationships I formed or rekindled by commenting, tweeting, emailing and meeting face-to-face more often.
  2. Make it a habit to wash my face.  This one seems simple, but I am not very good at doing it.  My skin is pretty temperamental, and I touch my face a lot.  I think that making it a habit to wash my face every night will help keep my skin clear and soft.
  3. Take more pictures.  I want to learn more about our DSLR and how to get the best shots, so that I can capture our lives better.  I want to be able to look back in 50 years and not be sad because all of my pictures are blurry and mediocre
  4. Run at least 2 races.  Maybe one 10k.
  5. Travel.  We already have plans with family to travel at Christmas, and depending on the location of this year’s Healthy Living Summit, go there, or do a trip to somewhere fun for a graduation/anniversary/Adam’s birthday trip.
  6. Cook more meals from scratch.  I have a bookcase full of cookbooks, so I’m thinking about doing a cookbook challenge like Tina did/is doing.
  7. Do more diy/sewing projects.  We just bought a new console for our tv, and it may need refinishing.  I would also like to make curtains for my office, and a new duvet cover for our bed.

Certainly more goals/resolutions than last year, but I think they’re achievable and maintainable.

I’d love to hear about your goals for 2011.  Taking on a home improvement project? tackling a long-distance race? losing weight or getting into shape? Tell me all about it!

I think I might actually be a runner now…

I ran my longest distance on Wednesday, 5km(3.1mi)!  It took me 46 minutes, running 2, walking 1.  This feels like a HUGE accomplishment for me.  When I ran for the first time in September 2009, I did 2 miles in 40 minutes, running 1, and walking 2/3/4 minutes in between.  Since then, I had a bout with Runner’s Knee, which I now know was from pushing myself too hard at the beginning.  I have also had some pain in my ankles during/after running, which has hindered my progress a lot.

Nevertheless, I feel like I can actually call myself a runner now.  Why now?  In the past week, I have caught myself thinking “when is the next time I can go running?” or “when can I squeeze some time at the gym for a run?” or “I can’t wait until Saturday, when I have more time for a longer run!”  Up until September, I never would have imagined that these thoughts would cross my mind, and now, I can’t wait until my next run!

I haven’t lost any of my post-wedding weight since I started to run, having also gradually changed my diet to include more fresh fruit and veg, and less fast and processed foods.  However, I have noticed some physical changes.  Firstly, my butt.  I have noticed that it is firmer now that it was before, my husband says it looks like a “yoga butt” now.  I have also noticed changes in my calves and thighs – muscle definition where there was none before.  All in all, I think I’m actually starting to buy into this running business, and hopefully creating some life-long habits in the process.

Also: I’m updating my blog roll today, all of these bloggers inspire me in some part of my life, so share the blog love with them!
